Winter
Winter in Alaska is a chapter unto itself. The winter of 2016-2017 has been my first time experiencing several feet of snow that stick around for months and months. It got incredibly cold, with an ice fog that would cover everything around it with inches worth of frost (on top of the existing layer of snow).
Light
While harsh, the Alaskan winters are also incredibly beautiful. The lower part of the sky turns vanilla, and then yellow, and vanilla again closer to spring. In the same way, the snow is never just white: it's blue, yellow, green, and even pink some times depending on the angle of the sunlight and the surroundings.
South-central Landscapes
The Turnagain Arm, outside Anchorage, AK, has some of the most substantial tidal changes in the world. When the tide is out, it creates mud flats that are as beautiful as they are dangerous. This inlet is also one of only two places in North America to witness a bore tide.
